Leadership CCC 'Character, Competence, Courage' - A Model for Good Leadership

A leadership mantra I came across years ago encapsulates the essence of great leadership in three simple letters: CCC — Character, Competence, Courage. These aren't just words; they are the pillars of leadership success, and the absence of any one of them can lead to failure.

Character is the foundation. It's the invisible thread that holds leadership integrity together. Without it, everything crumbles. Poor character decisions are like hidden cracks in the foundation; they may seem small, but over time, they erode trust, respect, and credibility.

Competence is the ability to excel in the area you're leading. It's not enough to hold a title or rest on past achievements. Leadership demands constant growth, learning, and effort. Imagine a leader who assumes their position alone makes them competent but fails to put in the work to truly master their field. This isn't just a failure of competence; it’s a failure of character; a refusal to take responsibility for the demands of leadership.

Courage is the strength to face challenges head-on, make tough decisions, and act in the face of uncertainty. Without courage, even the most skilled and virtuous leader can falter when the moment demands bold action.

Character drives the pursuit of competence. Competence empowers courageous action. And courage strengthens the resolve to uphold character. These three are inseparable. To lead effectively is to embody all three, with character as the heartbeat that keeps the others alive. Leadership isn't about titles; it's about action, integrity, and growth. Without CCC, leadership is hollow, and its impact is fleeting. With CCC, a leader inspires trust, drives change, and leaves a legacy.
