Between stimulus and response there is a space.  In that space is our power to choose our response.  In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” --Viktor Frankel

One day, a farmer’s old donkey stumbled into an abandoned well. Trapped and terrified, the donkey cried out for hours, his wails echoing from the depths. The farmer stood by, torn with guilt and frustration, as he pondered what to do. Finally, he made a heartbreaking decision—the donkey was old, and the well needed to be sealed anyway. Rescuing the animal seemed impossible and impractical.

Calling on his neighbors for help, they arrived with shovels in hand. Together, they began to throw dirt into the well, intending to bury the poor creature and move on. As the first shovelfuls of dirt rained down, the donkey’s cries grew louder, each one more desperate than the last. But then, something changed.

To everyone’s astonishment, the donkey fell silent.

Curious, the farmer leaned over the edge to see what had happened. His jaw dropped. With each shovelful of dirt that landed on the donkey's back, the animal did something remarkable: he shook it off and stepped up.

Again and again, the neighbors shoveled dirt into the well. And again and again, the donkey shook it off and climbed higher. The very dirt that was meant to bury him became his lifeline. Slowly but surely, the donkey rose closer to the surface until, with one final step, he leapt out of the well, trotting off with triumphant freedom.

The crowd was left speechless, their simple task transformed into an unforgettable lesson.

The Moral: Life will throw dirt on you—sometimes a little, sometimes so much it feels overwhelming. But what matters is what you do with it. When troubles pile up, shake them off and use them as stepping stones. No matter how deep the well may seem, you can rise above it by refusing to give up. With persistence, resilience, and determination, even the heaviest burdens can lift you to greater heights. Shake it off. Step up. Keep going.
